On May 19, Regents Professor Susan M. Wolf delivered the keynote address at the 51st convocation of Stony Brook University’s Renaissance School of Medicine in New York. Addressing the graduating medical school class, she cautioned that they were entering the profession of medicine at a challenging time, when science skepticism is climbing, confidence in public health sinking, and funding for research under scrutiny. “The truth is medicine doesn’t exist in a bubble," she told the crowd. Prof. Wolf traced the history of negotiation between law, ethics, and medicine that continues to this day. To arm these new physicians to practice in domains of social controversy, she urged them to recognize uncertainty when it arises, tap their allies including legal counsel and clinical ethicists, and above all anchor on the needs of their patients. “I see committed physicians who will excel at patient care, advance research and innovation, and take on the big issues beyond the bubble to move medicine forward.” Prof. Wolf is Faegre Drinker Professor of Law, Professor of Medicine, and McKnight Presidential Professor of Law, Medicine & Public Policy.
